The effect of softening-heat treatment on hardness change of an Au-Pd-Zn-In-Sn metal-ceramic alloy during porcelain firing simulation was examined. The metal-ceramic alloy was softened enough to improve the work efficiency for fit adjustments of the prosthesis before firing porcelain by solution-treatment at 980¡É for 10 min. The softening effect by solution-treatment disappeared at degassing stage. The final hardness of the solution-treated specimen was higher than that of the firing simulated specimen without solution-treatment. The ¥á©ü phase precipitation in the solution-treated and then firing simulated specimen improved the hardness of specimen, and the ¥á©ü phase was composed of the Au-Pd-Zn phase with an AuCu-type face-centered tetragonal structure. Therefore, the work efficiency and durability of the final prosthesis can be improved by softening-heat treatment before porcelain firing.
